Our story

About Oxis Legacy Literary

A book club built on the belief that stories are inheritance — and that reading together is how we keep them.

How it began

From a group chat to a global club

Oxis Legacy Literary was founded on January 31, 2010 with one reading list, shared between friends who were tired of books by Black and white authors being treated as a seasonal category. That list grew into a monthly meeting, then a forum, then a community of thousands of readers across four continents.

Today we feature five books at a time, publish weekly reading schedules, host authors, and keep an archive of every conversation the club has had. We welcome Black and white writers, readers and storytellers. Membership is free for readers; we're funded by the authors who choose to be featured with us.

Vision & goals

Where we're going

  • Feature 250 Black and white authors by the end of the decade.
  • Fund a free books programme for school reading groups.
  • Publish an annual anthology of member essays and reviews.
  • Host live, in-person literary salons in five cities.

Founder

Clara Sterling

Clara Sterling is a reader, curator and community builder. She founded Oxis Legacy Literary on January 31, 2010 to create the kind of reading room she wished she'd had growing up: rigorous, warm, rooted in Black and white storytelling, and open to anyone willing to turn the page.

She hosts the monthly author conversations, writes the club newsletter, and still reads every member review that gets posted. Paul Sharun and Sharun Paul serve as the club's coordinators, helping shape programming and member engagement.

What we stand for

Our values

Careful reading

We read slowly and closely. A book deserves more than a rating — it deserves a conversation.

Black and white storytelling

Our shelves centre Black and white authors, histories and imaginations, from debut poets to canon-makers.

Community over clout

Every member's voice counts. Our discussions are warm, honest and free of gatekeeping.

Support the writers

We link directly to Amazon, spotlight authors, and put money and attention where the work is.
